There’s an ongoing battle for ownership of the mega-million dollar newspaper, Newsday. The company launched by Daniel Chookolingo in 1993, is getting no media publicity because two years after its launch, the daily immediately became the fastest selling newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago outstripping the then 30-year old Trinidad Express and the mighty Guardian which was then over 75 years old. Both newspaper and their vast billion dollar media outfits have remained silent since the case was filed in the High Court in 2014.While Newsday’s up-to-date value remains shrouded, there was a valuation done a decade ago which put its worth at over $200 million dollars. Sources close to Mr Chookolingo says this is a bogus value which was given by the Steve Castagne controlled board to buy out minority shareholders to gain full control of his company.

TTJF will now present a brief history as to how the One Percent has manipulated this country from the 1960s to present to have a stranglehold on all vital sectors of T&T today through control of the legal system and judiciary, media and police. All top appointments to these aforementioned institutions are made with their approval as they now manipulate, bribe or threaten all and sundry to maintain their stranglehold on society.
This didn’t start today but goes as far back under the late Dr Eric Williams when a few of the elites convinced PM Eric Williams that he must not totally abandon or break ties with the colonial masters and they could be that bridge. Eric was still aware that the British colonials, who were normally in league with their American successors, could influence the development of the fledging nation as the CIA had done with Guyana, and therefore made ‘concessions’ with those who had cleverly positioned themselves as that bridge. Eric appointed some them to the highest positions in this country included John O’Halloran, Patrick Solomon and even then speaker Arnold Thomasos to name a few.
O’Halloran, to quote Selwyn Ryan, was described as “clearly the most powerful personality after Eric Williams…” The successors of this group are those we refer to as the Elites, One Percent, Freemasons, mafia and French Creoles today.
The main difference with the 2020 version of this group is that they have gone mad with how easily they can control and manipulate people with the use of modern technology like the internet and phone hacking. PM Rowley admitted in April 2022, to the government using an OEM version of the top hacking software, Pegasus. This program has been put in the hands of the One Percent (oligarchs) to carry out their nefarious activities to enrich themselves while Dr Rowley makes excuses for them but he makes no secret for his love for them as he simplistically said when they get rich we all do. The fake emails known as ‘emailgate’ is all their doing.
These born again colonials essentially exists because in Eric Williams, in his naivety even, installed them ignoring all he knew about them which was discussed in his award winning book, Capitalism and Slavery and famously said ‘Massa Day Done’. But did he believe it or did he simply just use it to pitch a line to a gullible nation?
These modern day One Percent are just like the infamous Italian mafia that control large parts of Italy and other metropolises. A November 2023 Italian court ruling shows the extent of the rackets and how they control countries when in that case over 200 persons were sentenced to 2,200 years in jail including prominent lawyers, politicians and other officials. The charges against them include murder, extortion, drug-trafficking, loan sharking, abuse of office, and money laundering. A BBC article states “Others convicted included civil servants, professionals across various industries and high-ranking officials who were critical to the ‘Ndrangheta’s (Mafia’s) success in infiltrating the legitimate economy and state institution … operating a (Mafia’s) success in infiltrating the legitimate economy and state institution … operating as far afield as South America and Australia. Its members infiltrated the local economy, public institutions and even the health system, rigging public tenders and bribing local officials.”
The BBC states “the judges presiding over the case were put under police protection over fears for their safety.”
This case and facts exactly mirror the events taking place right here in T&T with the very high institutions designed to protect us but instead are being used as part of a brazen series of criminality against this country and its citizens by the white collar criminals. They have infiltrated institutions like the PSC and independently the police service, the JLSC which controls the judiciary itself, the media, the public service and of course the politicians that promise to serve us.
At the very top of the feeding chain are the politicians and the legal system. All the apparatus to control the masses are now in place for them to succeed especially through media propaganda and narratives when for only certain topics are discussed in the public domain while ground-breaking hard core legitimate news stories are covered up. The standing instructions to their own media organizations and friends are that the One Percent must not get negative publicity. The appointments of the top editors and reporters are all approved by the One Percent. If this One Percent cartel can’t buy the media outfits out directly, they target the senior managers therein. Indeed, One Caribbean Media (the Express, TV6 and radio) admitted publicly they were the target of an illegal takeover when their shares was bought one day and resold the next for significantly less money by person(s) who wanted the share price to collapse…making them ripe for a takeover. A report was made to the relevant authorities concerning the obvious manipulation of their shares.
As for the legal system, the JLSC, who make all appointments, is the key to its control. Founder of Newsday newspaper, Daniel Chookolingo, has made a legal challenge against the imposters; the prime person is one Steve Castagne, who through the board transferred the share to himself without payment. He thumbed his nose at Mr Chookolingo to take him to court. This hallowed institution, the court, was apparently used for this real life imposter to succeed in this court matter when all the facts were stacked against Mr Castagne. The actual culprit, Justice Aboud, while stumbling and bumbled through his deliberations, explicitly told parties of how he manipulated the case because he felt he had the power to do that madness. Chookolingo has since reported the Chief Justice to the President and the PM for misbehavior in public office when sitting on the appeal against Justice Aboud obvious faulty ruling. The writing is on the wall for T&T; the One Percent will continue to rule this nation by the hook or the crook. Justice Aboud will go down in the annals as one of the most crooked judges in the jurisdiction even though his fellow judges and peers refuse to call him out for his misbehavior…which is there in black and white for all to see… with the notable exception of Justice Des Vignes. That’s the state of the nation as we have it today. That’s why T&T cannot stop criminal activity since the white collar criminals operate with impunity like Justice Aboud, above the law.
But, TTJF will now tell the nation that this unholy situation with the illegal manipulation of the country’s legal system has faces to it. Faces which are familiar to most of us.
The first post-independent head of the country’s elite is actually one of Eric Williams’ blue eyed boys, Patrick Solomon. He is the brother of Frank Solomon, an attorney at Law and senior counsel. Patrick was reappointed and promoted as a government minister by Eric Williams after going into a police station and misbehaving like he was also above the law.
His position as head strongman and mafia-man was succeeded by his brother, Frank Solomon. This powerful crime family was second only to Johnny O’Halloran, a man who does not need any introduction since his misdeeds are indeed legendary.
When Patrick Chookolingo AKA Choko was being hounded by the elites in the 1970s, Frank Solomon was the attorney who misadvised Choko how to proceed with his defense and as it turned out; his head was now in the lion’s jaws. Choko believed that Frank’s advice was sound, and went ahead with the bogus advice believing that Frank’s elite connections would take a back seat to the ethics of the legal profession. On appeal at the Privy Council, the Law Lords told Choko that he was already ‘misadvised’ by his then attorney, Frank Solomon. So Frank Solomon was the man who railroaded Choko which resulted in him being sentenced to 3 weeks in jail.
So, they failed in destroying the inimitable Choko. Choko went on to create a large newspaper empire with three weekly newspapers.
The railroading of Newsday shareholder by his attorneys
It must be noted that Frank Solomon’s law chambers had cultivated junior attorneys some of who he would train in his twisted version of practicing law, to contort the truth. Two of those attorneys were Deborah Peake and young James Aboud, now Justice Aboud. So, these two attorneys were actually apprentices for the Elite Club which Frank headed, having taken over from big brother Patrick Solomon, who once sat on the left hand of Eric, opposite to Johnny O’Halloran.
Fast forward to 1993, when Choko’s son, Daniel started the nation’s third daily newspaper because Trinidadians wanted something different from what was being offered by the long standing Guardian and the Express. Newsday became number one after a couple of years of its launch. Of course that has all changed today where it has settled back into third position.
But soon after its launch, Chookolingo and three other directors challenged Steve Castagne’s bad john tactics and behavior on the board and removed him as the chairman. Castagne had engineered a takeover of the company whilst Chookolingo was abroad. None of the shares he allotted to himself were paid for but infamously Justice Aboud didn’t think that was important even though it is a prerequisite for ownership. Besides the Justice Aboud insane decision, strange coincidences started to rear their ugly heads.
Castagne’s attorney was none other than the same Deborah Peake, SC, who worked in the same Frank Solomon chambers with James Aboud, the same judge in the Newsday matter. Incidentally, she likes to refer to herself as God but many others call her the ‘stockings lady’ since she in all her decades is never seen without them. And to make matters worse, Chookolingo’s attorney, Dinesh Rambally, once worked for Mrs Peake as her junior. What is even more strange, Chookolingo’s instructing attorney, Ms Darwish, was the one who hired Mr Rambally and spent most of the time defending him rather than doing her work and reporting to her client.
Elizabeth Darwish …
Spent her time defending the senior attorney
Steve Castagne … Manipulation
She was defending Mr Rambally from allegations of impropriety and unethical behavior after Rambally refused to pass the appeal documents to Mr Chookolingo but sent them directly to the London attorney. Daniel has come full circle when the apparent unethical behavior by his own attorneys was exactly what happened to his father about 40 years before. Both father and son were represented by attorneys who served in the same Solomon chambers which only came to light after-the-fact. Sounds like a nightmare! This time the payback was the ownership of the successful Newsday and its value which was estimated to be worth over $500 million dollars. Daniel has since shown a mass conspiracy involving auditors (Keystone) attorney former PNM senator Mr Coppin and some shareholders who agreed to take a small payoff now rather than wait for the true value. Police and reports to other agencies have all been ignored.
And the list of coincidences do not stop there, since we also now know from James Aboud himself, that his lifelong friend and confidante was BC Pires, who he studied law with, was married to Steve Castagne’s niece. What a massive string of coincidences!
