There’s an ongoing battle for ownership of the mega-million dollar newspaper, Newsday. The company launched by Daniel Chookolingo in 1993, is getting no media publicity because two years after its launch, the daily immediately became the fastest selling newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago outstripping the then 30-year old Trinidad Express and the mighty Guardian which was then over 75 years old. Both newspaper and their vast billion dollar media outfits have remained silent since the case was filed in the High Court in 2014.While Newsday’s up-to-date value remains shrouded, there was a valuation done a decade ago which put its worth at over $200 million dollars. Sources close to Mr Chookolingo says this is a bogus value which was given by the Steve Castagne controlled board to buy out minority shareholders to gain full control of his company.

As the recently appointed editor of TTJF, I often get calls from many people with juicy tidbits that they want the public to know about. T&T is full of people who want to offload stuff to try and make the country a better place.
Earlier this week my phone rang and the voice at the other end answered: “David, is that you?”
I immediately recognized it to be my good pal Peter, who many people call the Patriot.
I answered: “Yeah boy, what’s up? It’s been weeks since we talked!”

Peter, the Patriot: “Well David, you know with age I need more rest.”
David, TTJF: “Ha, Ha. So, what’s the latest? Anything earth shattering?”
Peter the Patriot : “Well, I hear the powers that be are after your fearless friend Daniel Chookolingo again and they filed a bogus case against him to shut him up as election is imminent.”
David, TTJF: “Why, what happened now? I know he is a marked man since he went up against the PNM hierarchy after a crooked Justice Aboud Ruling a couple of years ago.”
Peter the Patriot: “Well, I understand the same criminals who high jacked his shares at Newsday were behind this new case to block him from entering a property owned by his sister who left it in his capable care before her untimely death. The objective was to keep him off-balance until after the general election since he has detailed files on several big-time PNM operatives, who are helping themselves and the party clean out the treasury and then some. Choko has already called the names of the chief offenders and party operatives like (i) Deborah Peake (ii) Michael Quamina (iii) Steve Castagne (iv) PKF Auditor Mark Superville (v) Michael Coppin and many more. He calls them the core group the Crooked 5. All of them are professionally qualified people with the exception of Mr Castagne who is well known to be a key member of the Calder Hart clique before he departed T&T.”
David, TTJF: “But, Peter, how you know all this before me? “
Peter the Patriot: “Well, I also have a mailbox where I get stuff. The crooked 5 are trying to detract people from the truth and they are prepared to do whatever it takes to take the spotlight off Peake, Quamina, Coppin and PKF. I hear PKF international has shown real interests in what their T&T operations are doing since Choko has forwarded a copy of fraud reports to them. He started calling these names a few months ago after he saw some new documents and since then these high ranking PNM offenders are turning night into day to ‘fix him’ so the public won’t connect the crooked 1% with the PNM shenanigans and the stolen mega millions.”
David: “Yeah, I know, the TTJF carried a lot of that. You haven’t dented the surface yet because this 1% cabal took over all contracts after Calder Hart’s hasty departed and are the ones milking the State Enterprises which operate under the radar but hand out multi-million dollar contracts without scrutiny, especially where legal fees are concerned. Choko has it in for them because they are a bunch of greedy rip off artistes who care about no one but themselves while the country is falling apart.
He formed Newsday and in his naivety helped a couple of them to own some shares but they wanted all of the valuable company and got attorneys Peake, Quamina, Coppin and PKF auditors to falsify information to other shareholders. They, the crooked 5, have remained very silent since all this information became known, without a response since any response will put them deeper into a hole they dug for themselves. All this was presented to several authorities in T&T and internationally by Choko himself. In fact, Choko told the authorities that PKF never presented financials for over a decade but showed up at AGM meetings to tell members that the audit report will be late again…. for each of those years… but don’t bother, here’s your dividend cheque anyway. Eventually, the company sold the 40% Newsday shares for a piddling $8 million….a drop in the bucket. This was in that police report he sent.
The report states that for over 10 years not a single tax return was filed by the media company. I’ll really like to know if Peake, Quamina, Coppin and PKF advise their entire list of clients how to rip off the shareholders and the government the same way.
You can’t get more complicit than that and all this was made possible by Peake, Quamina, Coppin, PKF and Mark Superville with the help of many others he named. The majority of shareholders were paid off to stand behind the sale, except one of the clan named Francesca Sutton who appointed her brother Daniel, to make sure these professional crooks are exposed and return the loot.”
Peter the Patriot: “Well, if you know how T&T operates, the established media like the newspapers, radio, TV play a big part in controlling public opinion. Social media ranks low in terms of influencing people because there’s too much confusion for the general public. But CNC3 / The Guardian has capitalized on the social media confusion by introducing a segment called “The People’s Say” which is several clips showing you what the man-in-the street says. The CNC3 reporters who are sent on these assignments must bring back over 25 reports and the bosses (the 1%) choose about 5 of them each day.
So they play clips to manipulate viewers once again. In effect, they are trying to replace social media with their version of what the people ‘think’. A real sick agenda by the 1%.”
David TTJF: “That’s very insightful! I am informed that Choko has somehow managed to survive several attempts on his life… the major one was the spiking of his drink which put him out of action for a couple of months. This is the exact same thing that happened to one Andy Daniel who was gunned down by government agents from the Strategic Services Agency (SSA), after survived a poisoning incident with tainted coconut water. I believe Choko was targeted by the same operatives who did that SSA killing. As you know the SSA is the tool of choice of the PNM and their 1% friends to deal with people whom they can’t control. But, if the Judiciary is playing to the tune of their elite friends isn’t that just like the courts are part of the crookedness?

Just then the telephone beeped and I answered and low and behold, my other media friend, Skippy came on.
Skippy: “What’s up comrade!”
David TTJF: “You name just crossed my mind. I’m on the line with the Patriot about how greedy people mashing up the place. Hold on; let me make this a three-way call.”
Skippy: “Brother Peter … it’s good to see you are still active, I always read your incisive articles.”
Peter: “I was now telling David that Choko is being targeted again for calling all those wheeler-dealers names from Deborah Peake to Justice Aboud, and for calling a spade a spade.”
Skippy: “The man right, they are a bunch of criminals in suits and fake foreign accents. I’ve been following his case and I wish him luck. He sometimes checks me for my advice.”
Peter: “I was just telling David that a new court matter which was filed against him in May, Case # 2024-01624, , had to be organized and financed by Steve Castagne and Deborah Peake, Steve being the criminal mastermind behind the illegal takeover of Newsday.
He obviously controls everything and Dawn Ford, Choko’s estranged and very crooked sister. Well, the crooked 5 forced her to file an injunction against her brother to illegally seize a property from him to handicap him. This property was left in his charge by another of Choko’s sister, Francesca who passed in 2023, leaving all her assets to him to be used against Dawn Ford, Steve Castagne, Deborah Peake and the criminal bunch to make them account for the hundreds of millions they stole from the family. “
Skippy: “I’ve seen the court documents and, yes, Choko’s authority was validly given by a power of attorney and Will regarding her property which she occupied for 30 years, but the case filed by Dawn Ford said she was the owner and “superintended” the property for 9 years without any evidence…despite evidence to the contrary. She accused innocent Daniel of removing his mother’s personal chattels from the property many years after her death but contradicted herself when she says she rented these same properties for many years even before Daniel got involved with his sister’s real estate. But Ford used the flawed platform to accuse Daniel of being unbalanced, unstable and violent because he reported her to the various authorities how she misappropriated hundreds of millions in family assets and paid off many of her siblings in the process. Even former editor Susanne Mills accused the crooked 5 of complicity in the Newsday theft before her mysterious death. But Ford never tried to justify her actions about the stolen massive sums, but thinks that calling Daniel some choice adjectives will deflect the court, giving the crooked 5 enough time to come up with another devious plan before the next election. They want to get rid of him since his accusations may cause voters to see the evil of the PNM, the legal system and the police, specifically the SSA hit men embedded there.”
Peter the Patriot: “So, how is the Court going to deal with Ford’s flawed case which I see is chock-full of abuses (of process) is anyone’s guess, especially since the case is so full of untruths and flaws that when Choko replied to her initial lies she was dumbfounded and didn’t have a coherent reply. “
Skippy: “I really like the tenacity of Choko because based on what I’ve seen, the flaws are:

The affidavits are not “sworn” by Ford for obvious reasons

Hearsay evidence is not done in accordance with established procedure and rules

There is no authority that she can sue in her own name because she is not the owner or occupier

A Caveat filed against Dawn Ford ought to have stopped her application.

There is clear perjury and / or Fraud by her

Several instances of Abuse of Process are immediately noticeable were she must tell the Court she will pay the costs if / when she loses.

After the case started she illegally entered the property”
David TTJF: “And what did the Court do about the illegal entry? “
Skippy: “Well, nothing but they set a very long delay of 6 months for the next hearing which is in December... and I can’t figure why wait so long after she flouted so many laws. What about the lawyer on record, Mr Coppin, a former PNM senator? Isn’t he already tainted by the previous corruption police reports? Shouldn’t the courts refer him to the disciplinary Committee? I really think so! I intend to make the reasons public soon that will surely embarrass those concerned.
My main concern is that the 6 months will give the criminals plenty of time to do what?”
David TTJF: “I know the answer to that! Obviously, they must organize the SSA agents to make another hit.” In fact if I may say, this mischievous and flawed case has the paw prints of Deborah Peake all over it and the clumsiness of Michael Coppin, a novice in the legal business and it is reminiscent of the ugly chapter in T&T called emailgate. She is also known to be the architect of the Vincent Nelson KC, $100 million dollar deal that didn’t sit well with the DPP.
Peter: “But with all those dubious credentials she doesn’t know how to respond to a simple police report naming her as a criminal? Instead she is the architect of a bogus case in Court to get back at the whistleblower, Choko.
Anyway, let me get this right! First Ford says Daniel took his mother’s jewels and expensive stuff that their mother left in the Francesca’s property. When Daniel replied that the property was rented to non-family members since their mother passed, she completely ignored his reply. That’s juicy stuff for the Judge to send her for psychiatric evaluation. This is after testifying she had the property under her “personal control” for the past 9 years, yet she contradicts this by saying that she didn’t know Daniel was collecting rents for Francesca after he produced detailed receipts and bank records to show proof.”
David TTJF: “Isn’t this perjury?”
Skippy: Well, the little I know about the law is that this is either perjury or fraud.
Peter: “So what’s the end game? Ford has made no attempt to say where the several hundred million went to and the other assets as per the police report. The printing press was sold for $20,000 TT dollars but worth millions on its own. The advice Ford got about how to deal with the theft of the hundreds of millions was abominable to say the least. The advice by Peake SC, Quamina SC, Mr Coppin and PKF who do not seem to care that they have broken every rule in the practice, is beyond reason. But, remember something similar happened at A&V Oil with the very same Peake. SO the bigger question is how rampant is this behavior by attorneys and auditors?”
Skippy: This group of practitioners is behaving like they can jump on a plane tomorrow like Calder Hart and disappear. You just don’t file a case with so many fatal flaws unless you have some other devious plan up your sleeve. I’ll tell Choko that myself.
David: “Yes, tell him to drink pure water and breathe fresh air.”
Just as things were getting interesting, the dog barked and I jumped up from my nightmare.
